Igbo Association Appeals for Kanu’s Release

The Association of Igbo community in Egbiraland, Kogi state, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other Igbo leaders across the country for the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu.

In an open letter addressed to the President by Chief Joseph Anikwe (JP), the President-General of the Igbo Association in Kogi Central senatorial district, said the Supreme Court’s ruling of September 17th, 2025, which overturned/reversed the earlier discharge, granted the IPOB leader by the Court of Appeal, Abuja.

Chief Anikwe said the events surrounding Mr Nnamdi Kanu abduction from Kenya to Nigeria by security operatives , the reopening of the case of his earlier discharge based on the repealed on terrorism prevention Act of 2023 and the recent judgement of Supreme Court that reversed Nnamdi Kanu’s discharge, saying that his trial is predetermined, political, thus violating the constitution, international law and his fundamental human rights.

According to him, any legal proceeding taken after a repealed law amount to nullity.

The President General referred to the ruling of the court of appeal which discharged Kanu held that his extraordinary rendition from Kenya striped the federal High Court of jurisdiction, noted that the judgement of Supreme Court of December 15, 2023 has remitted Nnamdi Kanu’s case “Binding Discharge’ which amounted to gross violation of constitutional and international human right law.

He appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to release the IPOB leader based on the above grounds to consider Mr Kanu travails as political and apply political solution to release him.

He said releasing Nnamdi Kanu will go along way in reassuring the Igbos of adequate protection of their constitutional rights which will in turn guarantee fairness, justice and equity as this will douse built-up tension in the Eastern part of the country 2027 General Elections is fast approaching.
